Based in the Perth eastern suburb of Bassendean, Swans districts joined the WANFL (WAFL) in 1934 acting as successor to Midland Junction which had disbanded during World War 1.. They have won 8 WAFL premierships.

    Black swans were first seen by Europeans in 1697, when Willem de Vlamingh's expedition explored the Swan River, Western Australia. The Noongar People of the South-West of Australia call the black swan Kooldjak along the West and South-West coast, Gooldjak in the South East.
