Sporting Clube de Portugal - uncouthly, “Sporting Lisbon” - are one of the Iberian nation’s “Três Grandes” and it was an honour to have them feature in the 404th stage of the Crest Redesign Competition Weekly (CRCW).
Arguably, the honour was reversed by the execution of the stage, which attracted great attention - we extend a welcome to newcomers - and delivered an array of beautiful team badges.
The mix of styles didn’t compromise the aesthetic quality, and it was fun, for instance, to see the different approaches to the - some might say - adidas-like horizontal striping, with some un-adidas-ing it with addition of supplementary lines or kinks, and some unashamedly retaining it, with mbullockdesigns rotating it for a twist.
Beyond this, dips into the past informed the likes of giannakakis’s lovely halved affair, while Rabbi’s use of black injected further impact, and it was Segidio who won the day with understated timelessless and carefully sparing use of gold.
A great win as the result of a crowded voting space. We were blessed and we hope the sentiment was shared in the green-and-white portions of the Portuguese capital.
